Overview:

Join us for a discussion on developmental trauma and dissociation in youth. During this presentation, you will gain insight into the impact of developmental trauma on youth, methods for assessing dissociation, and strategies for treating these challenges. Information for this presentation will be derived from two key resources on these topics, “Healing the Fractured Child: Diagnosis and Treatment of Youth with Dissociation,” by Frances S. Waters, and “The Child Survivor: Healing Developmental Trauma and Dissociation,” by Joyanna L. Silberg.

Objectives:

· Provide an understanding of the impact of trauma and dissociation on youth

· Explore the definition and symptoms of dissociation in youth and how it relates to trauma

· A presentation of diagnostic approaches to identify and assess dissociation and developmental trauma in youth

· Discussion of different approaches to treating developmental trauma and dissociation in children and adolescents

· Applying the knowledge gained from these books in your work with youth who have experienced trauma

This presentation is suitable for mental health professionals who work with children and adolescents.

Presenter:

Dr. Ballewske (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist in the State of Wisconsin and the Training and Consultation Director for Professional Services Group, Inc. She received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology. Her professional training included inpatient and partial hospitalization for children and adolescents, school-based treatment services (individual and group for children 3-6 years of age), conducting county-referred psychological assessments for youth involved with DCFS, outpatient community mental health, and a one-year internship at a therapeutic day school. In these settings, she has gained experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of emotional and behavioral challenges. Dr. Ballewske has worked in the field for over 25 years, including over 10 years in Child Protective Services. Her primary areas of interest include trauma, attachment, and LGBTQ+ issues. Dr. Ballewske currently spends a majority of her time training and consulting with various school districts in the State of Wisconsin regarding trauma-sensitive practices.
